Two full-time Helpline Assistants help anchor the listening service during the day and support the continuity of Lifeline’s operations.
Who we are
Lifeline provides confidential emotional support for people experiencing despair, loneliness, emotional distress or suicidal thoughts.
Since 1980, Lifeline has served Trinidad and Tobago through a volunteer-driven listening service rooted in anonymity, confidentiality and care. Our work is guided by the belief that no one should have to face their darkest moments alone.
Through listening, outreach, volunteer support and public education, Lifeline continues to help break the stigma around mental health and suicide, while reminding people that support is available.
Support is offered with respect for privacy, dignity and trust.
People can reach out without fear of judgment or exposure.
Listeners give their time to be there for others when it matters most.

Our Story
Lifeline began in November 1976 with ten founding members who believed that people in despair needed somewhere safe to turn. By June 1978, Lifeline was offering a 12-hour daily listening service from Curepe, and in June 1980 it was registered as a charitable organisation.
Access to Lifeline continued to grow. In March 1985, the service expanded to 24 hours daily, and in June 1985 Lifeline acquired its own phone line: 645-2800. In June 2017, Lifeline expanded 24-hour access through toll-free lines from TSTT and Digicel, with free Flow-to-Flow access.
Our Patron
Former First Lady of Trinidad & Tobago
Lifeline is honoured to have Mrs. Zalayhar Hassanali as our Patron. Since 1997, she has lent her name, example and longstanding commitment to community service to support Lifeline’s mission of befriending the despairing and suicidal.
Her lifelong work in charity, women’s empowerment, child rights and education reflects the values of care, dignity and service that continue to guide Lifeline’s work in Trinidad and Tobago.
