Responsible reporting matters

Suicide reporting can either increase harm or encourage people to seek help. Lifeline encourages media partners to report with care, context and hope.

When reporting, please do this

Use reporting that reduces stigma, avoids harm and helps the public know that support is available.

  • Include a message of hope and local help resources.
  • Use person-first and non-stigmatising language.
  • Explain that suicide is complex and preventable.
  • Use general details instead of graphic or identifying information.
  • Share warning signs, coping strategies and pathways to support.

Please avoid

These choices can increase distress, stigma or risk for vulnerable audiences.

  • Avoid describing the method or specific location.
  • Avoid sensational headlines or dramatic placement.
  • Avoid treating suicide as a simple response to one issue.
  • Avoid publishing suicide notes or speculative reasons.
  • Avoid images or wording that may be painful to loved ones.
